Whether you’re attending a college football game or buying a new car, it’s pretty obvious – having the right color matters! But when it comes to meat goats, it’s time to forget it – because when they’re hanging in the freezer, a black Spanish goat and a brown Spanish goat look exactly the same – they're meat. So why do so many people (myself included) trick themselves into thinking the colored goat is better than the plain one? I guess we’ll have to leave that one to the sociologists!
But in reality, the color of the goat is not anywhere near as important as the ability to raise babies and stay alive – that’s what gets the kids to the sale. It doesn’t matter how pretty the animal looks if they aren’t able to do their job. That means good parasite resistance, solid average weaning (not just birthing), and natural hardiness. With those things out of the way, go ahead and breed the handsome buck to the pretty doe. Just don’t sacrifice quality for color. You wouldn’t pay the same for an old red work truck as a nice silver Corvette!
