We get phone calls all the time from people who are looking for information about Spanish goats. And do you know the first thing everyone asks? How big are Spanish goats? How much do Spanish goats weigh? Are Spanish goats as big as Boer goats? What is the biggest line of Spanish goats?
Well that depends on the goat! But here's what we've generally found to be true.
- Spanish goats are pretty average sized for the most part. They aren't 'kiddie-toys' but they're also not the size of small cows.
- Spanish bucks weigh between 200-250 lb and the does weigh between 100-150 lb depending on the line.
- Boer bucks weigh between 240-300 lb and the does weigh between 140-200 lb. So the Spanish are a little bit lighter (but that doesn't mean Boers wean more meat at the end of 90 days!).
- We've been told the Kensing and Weinheimer are the two bulkiest lines of Spanish, with bucks between 225-250 lb and does between 125-150 lb. Since Weinheimers are part Kensing, that makes sense! (however we have never owned any Weinheimers ourselves)
Just remember, there's more to goats than just body mass! If you're a first time goat breeder, look around a little before you buy. Otherwise, you might just find that raising the wrong breed of goats is more than you baragained for!
