Clean up bucks offer more to you than merely breeding a few does that might have been missed. They also let you identify does that are hard to breed or may not be able to reproduce. Any doe that misses two real opportunities to breed and become pregnant from September to January probably needs a new job.
As a rule, we like to leave about thirty days between the initial breeding and running in the second buck. It let's us know the father of the kids born later and helps us watch for does that may be hard to breed. We are about to run the clean up buck this weekend.
Using a second buck late in the season also let's us breed the doelings that are now large enough to breed. Early in the Fall, some doelings are really big enough to carry and deliver kids. Most of the doelings bred in December will produce. At the end of the day, using clean up bucks is worthwhile in our opinion.
