The Oklahoma Buck Forage Test warm up period started last week. Test Manager, Mary Penick, recently sent an e-mail advising the goats have some of the typical stress issues from the travel and the heat. It has been pretty hot for the end of June with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. The competition is significant with several recognized breeders from all over the country. We are happy to have our goats up against what looks to be some of the best. We want to know if our goats compare and measure up. If not, we need to work on the genetics in the herd.
We entered one pure bred Kiko, some Spanish/Kiko crosses, and some Kiko/brush crosses. When we dropped ours off, some of the competitors were already there. One young buckling from another farm was the size of yearling; well, certainly something larger than ours anyway. He was a fine looking, healthy buckling. It is all in good fun and certainly a great way to objectively scrutinize your goats.
