Just an update from our previous blog, the 3 year old Anatolian is adjusting to the change in environment well and goes with the goats for about half the day. He seems to have excellent instincts in keeping predators away, even going as far as to bark at the unfamiliar LGD's in the neighboring pasture. Only time will tell if he will become a full fledged goat dog or not, but for now we are very hopeful.
I personally think LGD's are born to guard. Granted, you can train them to do certain things "your way", but I think that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" doesn't apply to much here. You're experiment is an excellent idea, and I am not suprised by what you're finding. If someone is trying to guard chickens I think then it is almost crucial to get a puppy who grows up understand that is something to protect not harm. I am glad you posted this!

Are you familiar with Sarplaninacs? If not check out my website, I love talking to people who have LGDs and comparing notes.
